Collecting & Communing with Art

Collecting Art is solitary - collectors channel their energies and passions in ways few can comprehend. Endless facets accompany the journey of discovery and acquisition as a collector's legacy becomes a group of objects, some defying logic through their creation, others made by craftsmen liberated from ego through their craft. Our gallery descriptions contain no superlatives - we allow the eye and mind of the beholder to define Art objects. Some collectors take pleasure from the status of ownership, others through economic motives; however the true value of Art is gauged by the heart and its accompanying emotions. Art collectors are driven by complex forces, from melancholy to wonderment as Art becomes a conduit for the human spirit. This quest can last a lifetime as most collectors are not fulfilled by what they have, but by what they seek - their pursuit of Art making sense of the world as Art, in all its forms, is life and expressions of the soul of mankind…

The Galleries

The St. James’s Collection curates a few Art objects as they journey through time, preserving their future survival - items that tell a story and have cultural interest. Our curators can create a collection, a gallery, even a Museum for you.

Please take a few moments to view some items displayed in our galleries.

Endangered species conservation & protection

The St. James’s Collection supports any & all efforts to combat the unnecessary slaughter of any species just for monetary gain. The CITES convention of 1973 banned the commercial trade in ivory which has led to some stabilization in elephant populations. Rhinoceros populations remain an acute problem but there is less impact on the Art market as articles made from rhino horns are rare.

In any event, The St. James’s Collection does not handle, nor own, any items made of or containing these materials produced after the year 1925. Using all available scientific resources, together with over 50 years experience handling Art objects, we remain positive that no items in our Galleries contravene any laws or regulations of any country or jurisdiction. The St. James’s Collection can advise as to the regulations and eligibility for exemptions.

The above said, it is important to note that zealous, overreaching and draconian enforcement of the laws can be highly detrimental to continued ownership, study and conservation of many precious objects. In several states, especially New York, should the  superb object above be seized it could be ground in a woodchipper and destroyed forever…
